Originally commissioned to accompany Thomas Adès’s composition The Tempest, this octopus is cast in symbolic relation to Prospero. Its limbs spiral like the unfolding of fate, each gesture reaching yet tethered to a hidden core. The octopus, a true shapeshifter, becomes Prospero’s double: master of hidden currents, wielder of unseen power, dwelling in exile and in control. The drawing fuses natural form with mythic archetype, bridging the animal’s fluid adaptability with the magician’s magical powers.
