Quintessence takes its name from the “fifth element” of classical philosophy: that which exists beyond earth, water, air, and fire, the subtle ether thought to pervade the cosmos. In this drawing, spiraling and radiating forms evoke that unseen medium, suggesting energy as much as matter. The composition folds volcanic emissions, lava, mineral, and stellar references into one field, where lines resemble both branching roots and galaxies. The work positions quintessence not as abstraction, but as the connective tissue between forms, a reminder that all visible life is bound within an invisible order.
Field Note: The original work was commissioned by Western Oregon University for the Earth sciences wing in the natural sciences building.
