This design was originally created for the mid-century modern Natural Sciences building at Western Oregon University, as part of a larger commission celebrating biodiversity. It depicts a stand of birch trunks tall, upright, and continuous, their pale bark etched with markings that, if one looks closely, resemble small faces watching from the wood. Polypores spiral up the trunks, adding a rhythmic, vertical pulse. Lichens cling to the bark, their presence a reminder of clean air. Rendered at life-size scale, the mural creates the sensation of standing in a birch grove. The repetition is not ornamental but immersive, transforming the wall into a forest environment rather than a pattern. Birch trees are symbols of renewal, beginnings, and protection across many cultures. They are pioneer trees, often the first to grow in cleared or burned landscapes.
